Prof Sydney Rosen, MPA, is a Research Associate Professor at the Centre for International Health and Development at Boston University and the Co-Director of the Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (a partnership between Right to Care and the Wits Health Consortium of the University of the Witwatersrand).
Sydney’s research focuses on the economic and social consequences of the HIV & AIDS epidemic, including the impact of HIV on households, private-sector companies, and public sector agencies in sub-Saharan Africa. Her field of research also includes the benefits and costs of prevention and treatment interventions, and sectoral and societal responses to the epidemic.
She is the principal investigator of USAID, CDC, NIH, and foundation-supported evaluations of the economic and social outcomes and cost-effectiveness of ARV in South Africa. She has participated and led studies on the costs of HIV & AIDS to organisations and economic sectors in South Africa, Zambia, and Kenya.
She is the author of policy and review papers on the business response to AIDS, the rationing of ARV therapy, and the retention of patients in AIDS treatment programmes.
Sydney’s Her research has been published in AIDS, The Lancet, Harvard Business Review, Bulletin of the World Health Organisation, PloS Medicine, and Tropical Medicine and International Health.
Sydney’s technical training is in policy analysis and applied economics. She holds a BA from Harvard University and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard
