ImageDr Gustaaf Wolvaardt is the founding Executive Director of the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD), a private institution of higher education dedicated to improving health in Africa through education, research, and capacity development. Annually FPD enrolls around 17 000 health providers and managers, making it one of the largest health sector capacity development institutions in the southern hemisphere. FPD supports many projects aimed at strengthening public-sector service delivery, including AIDS treatment projects for 50 000 patients, VCT and TB/HIV projects. Annually these projects support 1-million patient interactions. Before establishing FPD, Gustaaf worked in academic medicine and served as the first South African Health Attaché in Geneva. He also serves on the board of directors of a number of local and international NGOs. His academic qualifications are MBChB, M.Med (Int), FCP (SA), and AMP (Manchester).
